For the philosopher Theophrastus was the "son of the rains" Plutarch: the synthesis of lightning, water and land

FRIDAY '20 THE WAY OF THE BLACK EDITION 46th NORCIA

Did you know that the black truffle of Norcia, Norcia on display with its aroma and taste from Friday February 20 and for two weekends until March 1, is quoted in the novel by Umberto Eco "The Name of the Rose "? And the greek philosopher Theophrastus thought this precious tuber, the "son of the rain"?

The Center for Documentation and Research Anthropological Valnerina, abbreviated Credav, after long and extensive studies have reconstructed the historical presence of the truffle of Norcia in the habits of civilizations past and present. Here is a small preview of the curiosity that you can find out by visiting the 46th edition of the National Black Truffle Market (February 20 to 22, 27, February 28 and March 1).

The earliest records date back to 3000 on the Nose years before Christ, when the Babylonian kings sought this delicious fruit in the sands of the desert. The Romans, later, began to appreciate the "tuber terrae" but the mystery of nature was the appearance of the nose, which for centuries has been the subject of disputes and assumptions on the part of philosophers and scientists. For example, the greek philosopher Theophrastus (third century BC) considered him the son of the autumn rains and thunder while Plutarch, greek historian of the second century AD C., suggested that the birth of the nose was linked to the merger of three major elements: lightning, water and earth. Pliny the Elder, the authority for mycological until the eighteenth century, called it "a miracle of nature." Apicius, author of "De re Conquinara", the first book of recipes that you know, preferring to leave the scientific side to gourmet truffles and suggests to heal as a simple condiment dishes. Even in the Middle Ages, despite the tradition attributing the alleged aphrodisiac properties that bind poorly to the asceticism of the times, the nose is present in the tables, in the verses of great poets, in the chronicles of the monasteries.

An indirect confirmation we have in the novel by Umberto Eco "The Name of the Rose", set back in 1327, in which he faithfully reconstructed medieval environments tells of a curious search. "I do not know yet that delicious fruit of the underbrush - monaco Adso says - typical of the land ... you want to Norcia Benedictine." Norcia and in fact is the home of "Tuber melanosporum" Black truffle that every year, between February and March, gives life to our forthcoming National Exhibition at the ribbon cutting.
